CURSE MACKEY † ARTIST
Curse Mackey is a visual artist based in Austin, Texas. His work spans painting, collage, performance-based art, and artist books, with a focus on physical process, material tension, and sustained action.
Trained in architecture and interior design at Texas State University, Mackey's visual practice has always run parallel to his music. Over time, the visual work evolved into its own independent language, expressed through large-scale paintings, working sculptures, immersive installations, and live performance paintings.
Mackey is known for creating paintings during live performances, working on large canvases placed beneath his body and equipment. Paint, paper fragments, and printed material are physically worked into the surface through movement and duration. The resulting works function as visual records of time, pressure, and presence, shaped by sound, movement, and duration.
Mackey is the co-author of two major art books documenting large-scale curatorial projects. Rides of Passage explores the intersection of snowboarding, urban art, and contemporary culture, featuring contributions from artists including Stash, Futura 2000, and Tristan Eaton. DRAW, co-created with Erik Foss, presents over 600 drawings by artists such as Richard Serra, H.R. Giger, Tom Sachs, Barry McGee, KAWS, Ron English, and others.
DRAW is held in the collections of The Menil Collection Library and the Thomas J. Watson Library at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
Mackey's visual work has been exhibited internationally and continues to expand through painting, publication, and performance-driven practice.
